One child remains hospitalized in Boston today with significant injuries after a large tree fell on him and another young boy as they played in a neighborhood public park, authorities said.

Diego Ruiz, 8, and David Mancia, 2, both of Chelsea, Massachusetts, were playing Monday just before 7 p.m. at Washington Park in Chelsea when the tree next to them crashed to the ground, authorities said.

City surveillance video showed people running in to help rescue the two boys and other children who had been playing in the area. Chelsea authorities said the part of the park where the children were was a "children's playing area."

David remained in Boston Children's Hospital today, authorities said. He was being treated for a possible fractured skull.

"His skull is cracked, a little bit cracked, and part of his ear, like, is not that good," David's sister Evelyn Mancia told ABC affiliate WCVB-TV. "But thanks to God he started speaking."

Diego was reported to be okay today but was headed back to the hospital for further tests. Those in the park reported hearing a large cracking sound right before the tree toppled, authorities said. Diego said today that he never saw the tree fall.

Washington Park has been closed and will remain closed till the trees in the park have been checked, authorities said.

"I am wishing both of the injured children a speedy recovery," Chelsea Police Chief Brian Keyes said in a statement.
