WILLOWBROOK, Calif. (KABC) -- A nurse was shot in the leg at a mental health care facility in Willowbrook on Monday afternoon.

The shooting happened at the Exodus Mental Health Urgent Care Center in the 1200 block of S. Wilmington Avenue at 12:13 p.m.

The facility, which is operated by a private firm that contracts with the Department of Mental Health, is located on the campus of Martin Luther King Jr. Medical Center Campus.

The male victim was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Sheriff's Deputy Amber Smith says family members had brought a 20-year-old man to the facility when he became agitated while being interviewed by a nurse practitioner. The worker pushed a panic button, summoning security to the room.

"He became more and more paranoid, and so they tried to exit him from the room, and during that event, a scuffle took place, and somehow, this patient had gotten into the facility with a firearm," said Luana Murphy of Exodus Foundation Mental Health Urgent Care Center. "The firearm discharged in the course of the scuffle."

The suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

No one else was hurt, and the building was not evacuated.
