Tensions rose when people protesting the fatal shooting of Ezell Ford gathered at 65th and Broadway on Saturday.

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Tensions rose when people protesting the fatal shooting of Ezell Ford and the death of Omar Abrego gathered in the middle of the street at 65th and Broadway on Saturday.

"They began kicking at cars, stopping traffic, and our radio call was generated. Our police officers responded. At that point, many in the group began throwing full plastic bottles and other unknown items at them," said LAPD Capt. David Kowalski.

Additional officers were called in to clear Broadway when demonstrators there became unruly. The crowd dispersed with no problems.

"We didn't have any reported uses of force involving our officers, nobody was hurt. Everybody was fine and now that area is peaceful," Kowalski said.

The LAPD said there will be an ongoing investigation into some of the behavior exhibited by a few people in the crowd.

Before that, a smaller group held a peaceful demonstration outside the Newtown Station.

Ford, 25, was unarmed when he was shot and killed by two LAPD officers from the Newton Station in August. According to authorities, Ford tried to take the gun of one of the officers, who stopped him for making suspicious movements. Ford's family has filed a lawsuit against the LAPD.

Abrego died after getting into a scuffle with officers from the same station Aug. 2.
