DEERFIELD, Va. (KABC) -- A single-seat F-15C fighter jet crashed Wednesday in western Virginia. The condition of the pilot was not immediately known.

Sheriff's officials say they received a call around 9 a.m. local time about a plane crash in the Deerfield community of Augusta County.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise that sounded like an explosion, and heavy smoke was seen coming from the side of a mountain. There were no immediate reports of injuries on the ground.

The plane originated from the Massachusetts National Guard and was en route to Louisiana, ABC News reports. Officials say the jet was on a standard training exercise to receive a system upgrade and had no munition onboard.

The pilot made a report of an inflight emergency, then lost radio contact, officials said.
