Police say a father and son teamed up in assaulting a Huntington Beach officer who had stopped them on their bikes Tuesday night.

The officer had pulled over the two men - later identified as Bryce Headrick, 23, and his father, Darryl Headrick, 58 - on their bikes around 11:23 p.m. at Beach Boulevard and Clay Drive, according to department spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Marlatt.

As the officer was speaking to the son, police said the father struck him from behind and then both began hitting and kicking him.

A woman who was riding along with the officer got out of the car and began screaming at the two men and they got on their bikes and pedaled away.

Other Huntington Beach officers who responded found Bryce Headrick in the area a short time later and then located Darryl Headrick several hours after that.

Both father and son were charged with second degree attempted murder on a police officer and Darryl Headrick was also charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

The 17-year veteran officer, whose name was not released, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries to his head and face and was later released to recover at home.
