Female students rated in school 'prom draft'
Female students at Corona del Mar High School were being ranked as possible dates in a high school 'prom draft.'

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- Female students at Corona del Mar High School were being ranked as possible dates for the high school prom in an NFL-style "draft." The draft is drawing a lot of criticism.

Some male students held a "draft" to pick a prom date. Some of the draft results appeared on Twitter. That Twitter account has since been deactivated.

Some students say the draft involved a small group of people.

Eyewitness News did try to talk with the school principal, but the Corona del Mar High School said she was not commenting. District officials say she did send a letter to parents on Friday when she became aware of a rumor of a prom draft.

"I am sure that the intention of this 'draft' is not to be harmful, but it may be. It is not okay for any student to be objectified or judged in any way," Principal Kathy Scott said in the letter.

In her message, Scott also urged parents to talk with students about the seriousness of this, saying: "Prom is an important event in the lives of our students and I would hate to have to cancel it or any other important student-related activity due to the negative actions of a few."
