Fire officials are asking residents in the Los Angeles foothills to keep watering their lawns because of fire concerns.

AZUSA, Calif. (KABC) -- Fire officials are asking residents in the foothills to keep watering their lawns because of fire concerns.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department sent out a letter to residents in Azusa, Glendora, Altadena and other areas near the foothills, urging them to "continue to judiciously water plants."

"There's definitely fires yearly around in these areas. So it's definitely good when they say we need to keep our ornamentals and our flowers green, then that's what I'm going to keep on doing," Azusa resident Nicole Alessi said.

The letter also stresses that residents should water in accordance to local water restrictions. In Azusa, that is two days per week. Some residents say they've gotten notices from the city about their water use.

"I'm going to have to stick with the water regulations and not water. Only because I don't want to get in trouble with (the city)," resident Deni Lynn Slone said.

With the drought, the hills have become bone dry, and firefighters said it could result in extreme danger for nearby residents.
