EAST HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles firefighters were responding to a greater alarm fire at a strip mall in East Hollywood Wednesday morning.

The flames broke out at a one-story commercial strip mall in the 4800 block of Santa Monica Boulevard at about 7:20 a.m. Firefighters reported that the building was fully engulfed.

Eighty-four firefighters spent 40 minutes knocking down the fire, which was confined to one unit and the common attic of several businesses.

"The roof is all out. No electricity. Lot of smoke damage to all of our materials," business owner Randy Paringit said.

Firefighters accounted for everyone inside. A woman who was in her 30s or 40s was listed in grave condition. Firefighters said they found a makeshift bedroom and that the woman may have been living at the business.

The woman's dog was found dead in the aftermath.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
