SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A spike in gang violence in South Los Angeles could be spread by social media and has resulted in increased police patrols in the area.

Five people were shot within a matter of hours in three separate incidents Saturday night, which resulted in the Los Angeles Police Department issuing a tactical alert.

Some believe the shootings are related to the social media postings using #100Days100Nights. They are messages warning of gang warfare and threats of 100 days of violence.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck downplayed the social media hashtag, stating the gang dispute dates back more than 40 years ago. He added that A fight that broke out at a funeral connected to a recent homicide led to the increase in violence.

Community leaders are very concerned by the recent gang activity. Pastor Anthony Smith of the Jericho Baptist Church in Compton worries the violence could spread.

Beck said there is no sign of continuing violence in South Los Angeles. He believes the posts were made by people who have no involvement in any activity in the area. Still, the police department is increasing patrols.
