HESPERIA, Calif. (KABC) -- A Hesperia couple was arrested for torturing their daughter after authorities discovered she had been admitted to a hospital multiple times for non-accidental injuries, San Bernardino sheriff's officials said Monday.

On July 15, a four-year-old girl was admitted to Loma Linda University Children's Hospital for ingesting a toxic substance. The visit was one of multiple times she had been treated, sheriff's deputies said.

Detectives arrested the girl's mother, 29-year-old Jamie Updegraff, and stepfather, 31-year-old Jake Updegraff.

Both were booked for willful cruelty to a child, failure to provide care to a child, torture and causing great bodily injury.

The girl remained at the hospital for treatment.
