SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) -- A stepson stabbed and killed his stepfather at an apartment complex in San Bernardino on Sunday, police said.

The stabbing happened in a second floor apartment in the 1300 block of Sierra Way shortly before 2 a.m. According to police, 23-year-old Robert Rosser, Jr. called to report that he was involved in a fight with his stepfather, 64-year-old Freddie Bell, and stabbed him.

Police said when they arrived, Rosser surrendered peacefully.

Police found Bell in his living room suffering from several stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two had a strained relationship, police said. Neighbors said Rosser was recently released from jail and had lived in the apartment for about two weeks.

Bell was loved by his neighbors.

"Freddie was a nice man, very kind, very respectful, good man," said one female neighbor.

Some neighbors said his distraught wife was at the building and left when police arrived. She told neighbors her son stabbed her husband while he was sleeping.

Details on the circumstances leading up to the stabbing were not immediately known.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with any information on this shooting was urged to contact Detective Josh Cunningham at (909) 984-5745 or Sgt. Gary Robertson at (909) 841-5361.
