CHINO HILLS, Calif. (KABC) -- A popular Chino Hills High School basketball player was involved in a tragic skateboarding accident that has left a sports community in shock.

Nnamdi Okongwu, a Pac-12 prospect, sustained a head injury while skating home from Ruben S. Ayala skatepark on Tuesday. He was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton.

There are conflicting reports about Okongwu's condition. His coach, Steve Baik, says the 17-year-old has died, but the hospital says, due to Okongwu's age, it cannot confirm reports that he is still on life support.

Okongwu was a center on the basketball team that played in the CIF Southern Section championship game in March. The 6-foot-9 basketball player would have been a senior in the fall.

ESPN rated him three out of five stars. Okongwu had already received a scholarship to play basketball at Loyola Marymount University.
