ITALY (KABC) -- Italy could soon become the first Western country to offer paid menstrual leave to women who experience painful periods.

The country's parliament is considering legislation that would require companies to offer women three paid days off each month.

Critics are concerned the law would make some employers think twice before hiring women. However, supporters say it will make employers happier and more comfortable.

Japan and Indonesia already give women time off.
