LAPD: Man who fatally stabbed mother's fiance shot by police
A man who allegedly killed his mother's fiance was shot by police in the Sylmar area on Monday.

SYLMAR, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man who allegedly killed his mother's fiance was fatally shot by police in the Sylmar area on Monday.

Police responded to the 13000 block of Gavina Avenue just before 10:30 a.m. and found a man with multiple stab wounds to the chest.

"At some point there was some type of argument that broke out in the house, and one of the sons ended up attacking and stabbing, and ultimately killing the fiance of the mother," LAPD Capt. Todd Chamberlain said.

Two responding officers tried to get the suspect, who was covered in blood and holding a knife, to surrender, but he charged at them, prompting an officer-involved shooting.

"The officers made contact with that individual, attempted to verbalize with him to drop the knife, at which point he failed to listen to the officers' directions and an officer-involved shooting happened," Chamberlain said.

Tom Krohmer watched as the responding officers opened fire on his 29-year-old neighbor.

"He continued to yell 'screw you' in a different way and came at them, and they didn't have a choice," Krohmer said. "He was crazy."

The victim was identified as a man in his late 40s to early 50s. The 29-year-old suspect was listed in critical condition, but later died.
