LAPD officer injured in Winnetka after suspect escapes

WINNETKA, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A Los Angeles police officer was hospitalized with a head injury after he tried to stop a fleeing suspect in Winnetka Friday morning, police said.

Police were called to the McDonald's at Vanowen and DeSoto streets after a man was asked to leave the restaurant because he was trying to sleep inside, officials said. The officers later found the man passed out in the parking lot.

They spoke to the man, later identified as Broomi Shawn Mansour, 26, and then ran his name, learning that he was wanted on an arrest warrant, LAPD officials said.

As they handcuffed and tried to arrest Mansour, he slipped away, police said. The officers tried to chase after him and one slipped, hitting his head on the curb and causing a serious, bloody injury to his face and eye socket.

Two passersby stopped to help the unconscious officer and take him out of the street. He was then brought to a local hospital for treatment.

"All of our officers put their lives on the line every day to protect the community and we're grateful that somebody had the wherewithal and the kindness to show up and help my officer," said LAPD Capt. Maureen Ryan. "I'm grateful for that."

The LAPD was placed on modified tactical alert Friday as officers searched for Mansour.

Area streets and neighborhoods were blocked off as officers conducted the search, but Mansour was not located.
