In 1997, Detective Frank Lyga killed undercover officer Kevin Gaines. Although Lyga was cleared of wrongdoing, he was recently placed on leave after an alleged recording of Lyga discussing the events around the scandal surfaced.

Some say the incident was just one part of the corruption within the LAPD at the time.
