SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- Friends and loved ones gathered Saturday to search for a retired Los Angeles County firefighter who walked out of his retirement community in Simi Valley 10 days ago and never returned.

Steve Voegtli, 63, who is known as "The Dude" by friends, walked out the door of his home. Family members are worried because Voegtli has early onset dementia.

Family and friends passed out fliers hoping someone would spot him. Search dogs were also used along with drones to check in some of his favorite hiking spots.

Letters were left at some of his favorite spots along the trail in hopes that he will read them and find his way home. Loved ones said the experienced camper and avid walker has been in survival mode before.

He is described as a white male adult, standing about 6 feet tall, weighing 180 pounds, with short brown hair, a receding hairline and hazel eyes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Simi Valley Police Department at (805) 583-6950.
