TORRANCE, Calif. (KABC) -- A 25-year-old man was fatally shot Sunday afternoon while he and his brother were standing on the front porch of their home in Torrance, authorities said.

Christopher Beasley was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The incident took place shortly before 4:30 p.m. in the 22800 block of Van Deene Avenue, where a man confronted the two siblings "and asked them where they were from," said Lt. Joe Mendoza of the sheriff's Homicide Bureau.

"There was a brief exchange of words between the suspect and the victims," the lieutenant said, adding that the suspect then brandished a handgun and shot Beasley multiple times. Beasley's brother managed to enter the house and escaped injury.

The gunman fled on foot into a waiting white SUV, which was last seen traveling northbound on Van Deene, investigators said.
