Man injured when weapon malfunctions at Newhall gun club

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (KABC) -- A 23-year-old man was injured at a shooting facility in the Newhall area of Santa Clarita Friday afternoon when a neighboring participant's gun malfunctioned, causing shrapnel to injure the man's ear.

The incident occurred at Oak Tree Gun Club in the 23100 block of Coltrane Ave around 4:06 p.m.

An employee at the gun club named Betsy said a piece of the cylinder of the gun came off the side and injured the neighboring participant. The actual shooter was not injured and the victim did not suffer any gunshot wounds.

He was transported to a local hospital, but is expected to be OK. The firearm was confiscated for further investigation. No further details were released.
