RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) -- A man was arrested in Riverside after a bizarre pursuit and incident that scared customers at a McDonald's restaurant.
Police responded to the McDonald's at 5010 Van Buren Blvd. around 4:30 p.m. Sunday after people at the restaurant called to report that a man was threatening to kill himself with a bomb in the parking lot.
Employees and customers locked themselves inside the restaurant as the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Hunter Rolf, allegedly threw an object at the doors and rammed into two vehicles in the drive-thru with his van.
Police say a person in one of the vehicles was transported to a local hospital after complaining of head pain.
After hitting the two vehicles, the suspect drove out of the parking lot and headed southbound on Van Buren Boulevard. Responding officers attempted to pull over Rolf's blue van, but he didn't stop so a pursuit ensued.
The suspect eventually stopped at Van Buren Boulevard and Firethorn Street and barricaded himself in the van by covering up his windows and windshield with screens, according to police.
As he was putting up the screens, smoke suddenly started coming out of the van. That's when officers said they fired a "less-than-lethal round" into a window so they could see in. Rolf ran into a nearby field, but was captured by a police dog, according to officers.
Rolf, a transient from Washington state, was expected to be booked on charges related to assault with a deadly weapon, failure to yield, theft, and a misdemeanor DUI warrant out of Washington.
