LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- A man was fatally shot by a Long Beach police officer during a search for a runaway female juvenile Friday morning.

Officers responded to the 2300 block of Eucalyptus Avenue around 8:10 a.m. regarding an "assist the citizen" call involving a runaway female juvenile.

Long Beach Police said the missing juvenile was located inside the residence with a male adult. Police said the two had a prior relationship, and there was a valid restraining order prohibiting the man from contact with the juvenile. There was history of multiple domestic violence cases involving the two, according to police.

Police said a verbal argument ensued, and the male adult armed himself with a knife. The officer then shot the suspect. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by responding paramedics.

No officers were injured.

The suspect was not immediately identified.

Police say the female juvenile runaway is safe and was being interviewed by detectives.

The investigation is ongoing.
