SOUTH GATE, Calif. (KABC) -- A Bakersfield man who was fatally shot in South Gate during a possible repossession gone wrong was identified Monday.

Steve Lawson, 50, who was a tow truck driver, was repossessing a car in Compton. Authorities believe he was then followed by multiple suspects in multiple vehicles to Rosecrans and Atlantic avenues, where deputies were notified of possible shots fired.

Lawson then drove east on Firestone Boulevard before crashing into an unrelated car at Rayo Avenue in South Gate. The suspects then shot Lawson when he exited his truck.

Lawson was taken to a hospital, where he died.
