Maywood rape suspect was on probation for peeping Tom incidents during arrest

MAYWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- A man arrested and accused of raping a woman in Maywood was on probation for peeping Tom incidents and exposing himself, officials said, and investigators were working to determine if he's connected to a string of crimes in the same city.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell stood alongside members of the U.S. Marshalls Fugitive Task Force on Monday to discuss the arrest of Salvador Martinez.

The 28-year-old was found Friday afternoon in Fresno, just a day after his photo was released to the public.

Police said he has a criminal history involving narcotics and at the time of Friday's arrest, was on probation for peeping Tom incidents and exposing himself.

Investigators said fingerprints had linked Martinez to a Nov. 13 attack, in which he allegedly broke into a woman's home and raped her.

It was the latest crime in a string of home invasions in Maywood - the youngest victim to be groped was just 13 years old.

Though authorities are not yet connecting Martinez to all the crimes, a sketch of the suspect wanted in those other attack closely resembles Martinez's photo, investigators said.

The sheriff's crime lab was now hard at work.

"Anytime we get somebody in custody, we then have the ability to compare evidence taken from other cases...fingerprints, DNA, trace evidence, witness statements, ID, video," McDonnell said.

Cpt. Carlos Marquez of the LASD Special Victims Bureau said it is also possible such incidents didn't just occur in the city of Maywood.

"We are asking the community to continue to call us with any tips they may have and any additional information they believe is instrumental in bringing this case to a close," Marquez added.
