ARLETA, Calif. (KABC) -- A 29-year-old man riding his motorcycle was struck and killed by a hit-and-driver in Arleta over the weekend. Now, his family is seeking justice.

Authorities say Steven Vega, of Sylmar, was struck around 3 a.m. last Saturday on Devonshire Street just south of Arleta Avenue.

Following the crash, Vega was transported to an area hospital, where he died of his injuries.

"I don't know how a person could live with that guilt on their conscience," said Christina Vega, Steven Vega's mother.

Family members believe that if the driver would have stopped and called 911, Steven Vega could have survived.

"Split seconds count when someone's life is hanging right there," said John Vega, the victim's bother.

Police say this was an accident that quickly turned into a crime.

"Our investigation at this time revealed that the traffic collision was caused by the motorcyclist that went onto oncoming traffic as a result of a turn," said LAPD Detective Bill Bustos. "But it did become a crime, a felony crime once that driver chose to leave the scene."

Police are now searching for that driver. They do not have a clear description of the vehicle and are asking for the public's help.

A $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Bustos said the hit-and-run car is expected to have damage to the front or the driver's side.

"He was always smiling and he loved children," said Christina Vega.

A GoFundMe account has been created to help the family with funeral arrangements.
