LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- The new police chief of Long Beach was sworn in Saturday during a special ceremony.

Robert Luna is the first Latino to hold the position and is the 26th person to take on the role.

Luna was considered the frontrunner for the job in 2010, but was passed over for Jim McDonnell.

McDonnell was elected this month as Los Angeles County sheriff, which prompted the Long Beach mayor to announce Luna would replace McDonnell.

Luna was raised in East Los Angeles and is a graduate of executive study programs at Harvard and the FBI Academy.

According to the city's website, Luna joined the Long Beach Police Department in 1985 and has been managing the daily operations of the Patrol Bureau since 2006.
