NorCal bus crash: CHP blames FedEx driver for 'unsafe' maneuver
A driver of a FedEx truck that collided with a bus full of students in Northern California last April was making an unsafe driving maneuver, California Highway Patrol announced Friday.

HACIENDA HEIGHTS, Calif. (KABC) -- A driver of a FedEx truck that collided with a bus full of students in Northern California last April was making an unsafe driving maneuver, California Highway Patrol announced Friday.

"The driver Timothy Evans -- the driver of the FedEx truck -- (allowed) his vehicle to travel across the median in an unsafe turning movement," CHP Sgt. Nate Parsons said.

On April 10, 2014, the FedEx truck crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a Nissan Altima and then a tour bus carrying students on their way to visit Humboldt State University on the 5 Freeway near Orland. The vehicles caught on fire.

Ten people were killed and 39 more injured, including students and chaperons.

After a year of investigation, CHP investigators still can't answer is why the driver changed lanes. They did not find environmental or mechanical factors, but noted some evidence of fatigue existed.

"We looked at fatigue. We looked at some type of medical condition. To the best that we possibly could, we eliminated everything that we could under those scenarios. This is one of those very, very difficult accidents," CHP Chief Ruben Leal said.

Debra Loyd lost her grandson, Michael Lee Myvett, Jr., in the crash.

"They gave us our answers and now I have closure, because now I know what happened," Loyd said.

Several of the victims' families are suing FedEx, which issued a statement: "FedEx Freight cooperated fully with federal and state agencies during their respective investigations, and will carefully review the CHP report. However, we will reserve comment until the NTSB has also completed its work and finalizes and releases its findings."

Family members say the tragic saga is not over, as they worry they will be in court for months.
