NorCal bus crash: Mother of student Jennifer Bonilla sues FedEx

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The mother of a 17-year-old student who was killed in a fiery Northern California bus crash has sued FedEx for $100 million.

The negligence suit also names the estate of the FedEx driver and the bus owner, Silverado Stages. It claims FedEx's trucks have a history of catching fire and that the bus did not have adequate exit doors.

Rosa Rivera, the mother of Jennifer Bonilla, a former honors student at Dorsey High School, filed the suit.

Bonilla was among 10 people killed in the April 10 crash on the 5 Freeway in Orland. The bus she was on was headed to Humboldt State University for a tour before it was struck head-on by the FedEx truck.

Five students, three adult chaperones and both drivers died.

"Our heartfelt condolences remain with everyone affected by this tragic accident," Memphis, Tenn.-based FedEx Corp. said in a statement. "We remain focused on providing support to those affected and cooperating with the authorities as they conduct their investigation. This is not the time for us to discuss potential litigation."

The California Highway Patrol has not yet determined the cause of the crash.
