TORRANCE, Calif. (KABC) -- A 26-year-old suspect was fatally shot by Los Angeles police at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance on Saturday.

LAPD officers initially responded to a call around 8 a.m. of a vandalism suspect in the 1600 block of West 207th Street.

Witnesses told police the suspect was throwing bottles at an apartment complex nearby, and when authorities arrived, the suspect attacked police and attempted to grab an officer's gun, according to Phillip Tingirides of the LAPD.

After the scuffle, officers and the suspect were transported to the hospital, located at 1000 W. Carson Street, to get treatment for minor injuries from the fight.

After being treated, the suspect attacked two other officers as he was released from the gurney. Tingirides said the suspect grabbed a chair in the "extremely busy trauma center" and officers tried using a taser to stop him. That is when police said the suspect reached for an officer's gun and the officer-involved shooting occurred.

"Witnesses also described that his demeanor prior to them unhandcuffing him was very cooperative, very somber, very cooperative, so, there wasn't an expectation on the officer's part that he would attack again like that," Tingerides said.

Officers fired one round at the suspect before he died about half an hour later after receiving treatment from doctors at the hospital.

The identity of the suspect was not released.
