OXNARD, Calif. (KABC) -- Residents in an Oxnard neighborhood are on alert following a frightening home burglary and sexual assault.

The incident happened Wednesday around 10 a.m. on the 5200 block of Saviers Road.

Police say a man wearing a black ski mask entered a home through an open back door and sexually assaulted a 37-year-old woman.

The suspect then tried to strangle her, but investigators said she broke free and barricaded herself in the garage and called police. The suspect fled the area and remains at large.

Oxnard police described the suspect as a Hispanic male, about 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 6 inches tall with a thin-to-medium build and a mustache.

He was seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black ski mask, blue jeans and white tennis shoes.
