PASADENA, Calif. (KABC) -- A video store clerk was hospitalized in stable condition after being shot during an attempted robbery by two suspects in Pasadena Friday night.
The shooting occurred at Pepe's Video & Wireless in the 300 block of E. Orange Grove Boulevard at 7 p.m.
One of the suspects, who was armed with a handgun, shouted, "this is a robbery."
"They confronted the clerk, a struggle ensued between one of the suspects and the clerk, and one gunshot was fired," said Pasadena Police Lt. Art Chute. "The clerk was hit, the suspects then fled the location in an unknown direction."
One customer and other employees were in the store at the time and witnessed the shooting. They were interviewed by police.
The injured clerk was treated for a gunshot wound to the upper torso and later released.
The armed suspect was described as an African American male weighing approximately 300 pounds, wearing all dark clothing. The second suspect was described as an African American male with a thin build. Both were described as being in their mid-20s.
There is no security video to aid in the investigation.
It was not immediately known whether the robbery suspects fled with money.
Pasadena police shut down Orange Grove Boulevard between Los Robles and Marengo avenues as they collected evidence, brought in bloodhounds and investigated the scene. The area was reopened shortly after 8:30 p.m.
