LENNOX, Calif. (KABC) -- Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver in Lennox after a homeless pedestrian was struck and killed early Sunday morning.

The California Highway Patrol said a black Honda Accord struck the adult male, throwing the victim nearly half a block away. The victim was walking with a shopping cart shortly before 10 a.m. in the area of Lennox Boulevard and Eastwood Avenue.

Authorities said the suspect fled the scene, heading westbound on Lennox Boulevard.

A woman in the area said she heard a loud noise and went outside to see what happened.

"I see a cop car, nothing much, and as I look down toward Freeman, I see what appears to be a body-sized kind of orange bag," Cindy Borroto said.

The road was shut down for several hours between Eastwood and Freeman avenues, according to CHP officials. All lanes were reopen shortly before 2 p.m.

The man has not been identified by authorities, but they said he was a known homeless man in the area.

No other details were immediately available.
