HEMET, Calif. (KABC) -- A pedestrian walking in the road was hit and killed by a driver in Hemet, police said.

The incident was reported around 9:40 p.m. Friday in the 600 block of south Sanderson Avenue, police said.

When police arrived, they found the 36-year-old male pedestrian dead in the road. The driver pulled over at the scene and was distraught, police said.

Investigators said for unknown reasons, the man was walking in the road on Sanderson Avenue between Acacia Avenue and Wentworth Drive instead of walking on the dirt shoulder. He was then hit by a Chrysler 300. The car was travelling between 35 and 40 miles per hour at the time of the collision, police said.

The driver told investigators they saw a "flash of white" before hitting the man, who police said was wearing a white T-shirt at the time.

DUI is not suspected in the incident, police said.

The pedestrian's name is not being released, pending family notification.
