Population of mosquitoes with West Nile Virus spikes in Tustin
There has been a huge spike in the number of mosquitoes testing positive for the West Nile Virus in Tustin.

TUSTIN, Calif. (KABC) -- There has been a huge spike in the number of mosquitoes testing positive for the West Nile Virus in Tustin.

Authorities are concerned about a two-block section of Tustin, which includes about 40 homes and two public parks. The area has higher than normal rates of mosquito samples infected with the West Nile Virus.

Of 32 samples that tested positive in Orange County, 26 of them came from Tustin.

The reason is a mystery, especially when most of Orange County has below normal levels of mosquitoes with the virus. The insects get the virus after feeding on birds infected with it, and the mosquitoes can pass the virus to humans after biting them.

The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District is passing out informational fliers in the neighborhood, asking residents for permission to use hand sprayers to get rid of mosquitoes in backyards.

So far no human has contracted the virus this year, but last year almost 300 people became infected with West Nile and nine died.

Experts recommend getting rid of any standing water around the home and to make sure screens and windows are in good repair.
