Protesters continue to demand closure of Aliso Canyon facility in Porter Ranch

PORTER RANCH, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Protesters marched onto the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility to demand its closure Sunday afternoon.

Many Porter ranch residents have not moved back into their homes after a massive gas leak at the facility started nearly seven months ago. They feel the area is still unsafe despite the leak being capped in February.

Residents and members of environmental groups said they are disappointed with Gov. Jerry Brown for signing SB380 last week. Under the urgent legislation, SoCalGas cannot begin injecting natural gas into the wells until they are tested and deemed leak free.

After months of residents being displaced from their homes and the adverse health effects many of them have experienced, they believe the bill isn't enough to hold the facility accountable.

"It has essentially greenlighted the reopening of this facility, even though there are thousands of people still displaced from their homes, thousands of people are still sick in the aftermath of this blowout and we won't stand for it," said Alexandra Nagy with the organization Food and Water Watch.

Some of the protesters blocked the entrance to the facility and were willing to risk being arrested. Most of them were not from the area, but feel strongly about the issue.

SoCalGas called the Los Angeles Police Department to monitor the situation, but did not want police to arrest any of the demonstrators.
