Remote-controlled locks installed at Fountain Valley high school
Remote-controlled locks were installed on classroom and office doors at Valley Vista High School in Fountain Valley following a rise in school shootings. The locks were funded by ROK Mobile.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- According to security company Safer Schools for America, bullet-resistant doors could help save lives.

In response to a rise in school shootings, the California company began making the doors, remote-controlled locks and bullet-resistant windows for classrooms.

"We want to let the teacher be the first responder and do our part to mitigate the loss of lives and deter a shooting from happening," said Ron Triebels, co-founder of Safer Schools For America.

But at about $500 a piece, the new technology is not in the budget for many schools. Billionaire businessman and co-founder of Paul Mitchell hair care John Paul DeJoria wants to change that.

He and his business partners want to fund safer schools using their new phone and music service, ROK mobile.

"If we get 500 kids every month, we can give two grand back to a school, and for $25,000 we can secure the whole school," said Jonathan Kendrick, co-founder of ROK mobile.

ROK Mobile promises to donate $2 to $4 of every subscriber's bill, every month, to help schools buy the technology.

On Tuesday, the company donated locks for every door at Valley Vista High School in Fountain Valley.

"This, I think, is just conducive in terms of kids kind of changing their thinking and feeling more relaxed about school," said Valley Vista High School principal Kerry Clitheroe.

ROK Mobile and Safer Schools for America plan to donate door locks to three more schools in Orange County in the coming months.
