Runyon Canyon Park back open after 4-month closure

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Runyon Canyon Park reopened on Tuesday after closing for four months for a water system repair project.

Outdoor enthusiasts wasted no time hitting the popular hiking spot early Tuesday morning.

Officials closed the park in April so crews with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power could work efficiently to replace a 90-year-old water pipeline and put in new fire hydrants, which are crucial for protection of the park and nearby residents.

LADWP authorities said crews finished under budget by $1 million and ahead of schedule.

"I was here on the last day when it closed up. I was waiting all this time, what, about three and a half months now? All summer we've been missing out," said hiker Darrell White.

During the closure, crews also paved fire roads, installed new erosion controls and also put in new drinking fountains.

Even if you're not a Runyon regular, you may see some benefits if you're an LADWP customer. Officials say customers may see some reduced costs in the long run, since the new improvements are expected to prevent pricey future leaks and breaks.
