Runyon Canyon Park to close for 4 months for water system replacement project

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The popular Runyon Canyon Park will be shut down for four months beginning April 1 for a water system repair project.

The Runyon Canyon Water System Improvement Project will include replacement of a 1-mile 6-inch pipe that runs through the park. The replacement is meant to improve the area's fire protection system, reduce the risk of pipe breaks and improve local water quality, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

Runyon Canyon Park will be closed from April 1 until July 31, the LADWP said. The project includes excavation of a trench along fire road trail that involves a pipeline installation and refilling the trench. The trail will be restored and improved, the LADWP said.

The following parks also remain open and are alternatives for Runyon Canyon Park until it reopens:

• Hollywood Reservoir, 6399 Weidlake Dr., Hollywood
• Wilacre Park, 12601 Mulholland Dr., Studio City
• Griffith Park, 4730 Crystal Springs Dr., Los Angeles

While the park will be closed, the yoga field next to it will remain open during the construction process.
