SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) -- Santa Ana homicide detectives are investigating the suspicious death of a 2-year-old boy on Saturday.

Officers responded to a medical aid call at around 1:45 a.m. in the 2500 block of South Linda Way.

Neighbor Margarita Rosales said she heard a woman outside screaming "help me" and later "my baby." She added that her neighbor was crawling in the street, but Rosales was unsure what happened inside the house.

Authorities said the boy was found not breathing in a bedroom and pronounced dead at the scene. No cause of death was announced, but police were investigating the death as a homicide.

"Based on the suspicious circumstances of what they saw, they called homicide detectives," Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

Neighbors said the couple and their son moved in less than a year ago. A woman lived in the upstairs apartment and the family lived on the first floor.

Both the toddler's parents and the woman were interviewed. No arrests were made.

An autopsy was planned for Monday.
