WALNUT, Calif. (KABC) -- Search crews have stepped up efforts to find a Walnut High School student who went missing Wednesday.

Kayne Doughty, 14, failed to show up for a cross-country team meeting at school. The 14-year-old boy's lunchbox was found along the public running trails at the Icetrek Bridge in Walnut Thursday morning.

Helicopters with infrared technology and search dogs scoured the area to no avail.

Doughty's father says the teen's phone last pinged in the wooded area Wednesday afternoon, but he believes his son's phone has since died. He believes his son is being held somewhere else against his will.

"He would never ever walk home, so yeah it's not like him, especially not to call us. Yesterday, we were texting him and somebody was checking his messages, my wife could see that, but not responding, and that's not like him," he said.

Investigators have found no evidence of foul play so far. Anyone with information on the boy's whereabouts was urged to contact the Los Angeles Regional Crime Stoppers line at (800) 222-TIPS.
