LANCASTER, Calif. (KABC) -- A Southern California Edison worker who was working on the side of the road in Lancaster was killed after being struck by a civilian vehicle on Friday, authorities said.

A driver of an older model BMW was driving westbound on Avenue K when he lost control for unknown reasons and struck the utility worker shortly before noon. The crash happened at 20th Street East and Avenue K, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The SoCal Edison worker, a man in his 50s based in Antelope Valley, died at the scene, officials said.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate the driver, who is in his 20s, according to officials. He suffered serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital.

An investigation into what led up to the crash was ongoing, but investigators said alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

Southern California Edison issued a statement, which read in part: "Our thoughts, prayers and condolences are with his family and many friends."
