LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A Southern California base jumper died Tuesday when his parachute failed to open during a festival in Turkey.

Ian Flanders, 37, was attending a base jump festival in Dark Canyon, Erzincan, which is in the eastern part of the country. During a jump, his parachute cord became tangled around his leg as he plummeted into the Karasu River, investigators said.

Rescuers recovered his body from the river. Flanders was reportedly working on a documentary about base jumping related deaths.
