THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (KABC) -- Southern California's most famous mountain lion has made a remarkable recovery after suffering from a severe bout of mange.

Researchers recaptured "P-22" back in December in Griffith Park and found he'd beaten the disease after he was exposed to rat poison.

"He's gained some weight, his tail has filled out, and he no longer has skin lesions and scabs across his body and face," Jeff Sikich, a biologist with Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, said. "It's highly likely that he continues to be exposed to rat poison, but for now he seems to be managing."

P-22 famously graced the December 2013 cover of "National Geographic" after he was spotted roaming near the Hollywood sign.

The now 6-year-old mountain lion also built a den under a home in Los Feliz.

Researchers are happy to report P-22 now weighs about 15 pounds more than his previous capture.
