SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man suspected of shooting and killing his brother during a family gathering in South Los Angeles turned himself in on Sunday.

Derrick Anthony Hill, 48, was fatally shot by his brother, Louis Hill, 40, outside of his home in the 800 block of East 78th Street around 9 p.m. Saturday, Los Angeles police Lt. Jeff Nolte said.

"What we know now is that his brother, Louis Hill, shot Derrick Hill. What we don't know is why," Nolte said.

Their mother, Doris Hill, said the family was celebrating her granddaughter's ninth birthday. According to Doris, Derrick brought the girl ice cream and cake.

Dorris said the Derrick eventually went outside with some friends. Moments later, she heard gunfire.

"I lost one of my babies, something that I never wanted to do," Doris said.

Louis Hill was booked on suspicion of murder. He is being held on $1 million bail.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to call Los Angeles police at (877) LAPD-24-7.
