Earthquake kits a popular sell in SoCal
Southern California residents flock to emergency supply stores to stock up on earthquake kits.

PASADENA, Calif. (KABC) -- Bernice Washington says she had one reaction when she heard about the earthquake in Napa: buy an emergency kit.

She had her caretaker bring her to Safe N' Ready, a store in Pasadena that specializes in emergency supplies and disaster preparedness.

"I think it's a good idea. I think we need it. I think we all need it," caretaker Leina Butler said.

Owner of Safe N' Ready Bud Darling got the idea to open his store two years ago. He said after any major quake he sees a spike in business.

"After the La Habra earthquake, we had people standing in line from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.," Darling said.

A two-person kit costs about $80 and comes fully loaded with supplies for 72 hours.

Other supplies sold at the store include first aid kits for pets and a solar-powered generator for $1,000.

As for Washington, she said she's had kits before, but has never had to use them.

"I hope I don't have to use this, but if I do, I'll have it," Washington said. "I just want to be ready."
