LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The suspect who was killed in a shootout with Los Angeles police early Monday morning has been identified as 37-year-old Andre Maurice Jones of Los Angeles.

The incident began around 2:20 a.m. when officers attempted to pull over the driver of a Chevy Suburban for reckless driving on the 110 Freeway in Florence. Police say two people inside the vehicle fired at officers on the Vernon Avenue on-ramp. The suspects led authorities on a brief chase, which ended when the suspects crashed at the intersection of 37th and Hill streets.

The suspects then fired at officers again and fled on foot, triggering a three-hour search. Police used tear gas to apprehend the first suspect, who was hiding in a trash can. He was identified as Avel Jowen Turks, 18, of Corona.

Jones was killed after firing a rifle at police, according to investigators. Turks was booked for attempted murder and is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

A SWAT officer suffered a severe leg wound during the shootout. He remains hospitalized in stable condition after undergoing surgery.

Two other officers sustained minor injuries after crashing their patrol vehicles during the pursuit.
