SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspect who barricaded himself inside a building in Santa Monica and prompted a Los Angeles County Sheriff's SWAT team response was taken into custody Saturday afternoon.

Residents in the 4-unit apartment building and nearby homes were evacuated. Neighbor Barry Thurston Jr. heard deputies yelling at the suspect to surrender.

"We finally peeked through my front curtains and saw some SWAT members with their guns trained on the apartment upstairs," Thurston Jr. said.

Thurston Jr. was eventually evacuated along with friend Mary Jo Gumina.

"The scariest part was coming out and being shielded by all these officers with guns. We felt safe with them, but it was scary," Gumina said.

The circumstances of what led up to the barricade was unclear. The suspect was identified as 28-year-old David Carrillo. He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

No further information was immediately available.
