2 arrested after high-speed chase, collision on 5 Freeway

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Two men in a suspected stolen pickup truck led police on a high-speed chase from Santa Clarita to the Griffith Park area on the 5 Freeway Tuesday, smashing into another vehicle and fleeing on foot before they were arrested.

The chase began around 2:30 p.m. in the Santa Clarita area, with officers following the pickup on the 5 Freeway at speeds up to 100 mph.

As they reached the area near Griffith Park, the suspects tried to exit the freeway, smashing into an SUV in the exit lane. The SUV fully spun around and came to rest on the side of the freeway, while the suspects kept driving off the exit.

A short time later, they stopped the vehicle and tried to flee on foot on Los Feliz Boulevard.

Officers caught up to them within minutes and took them into custody just before 3 p.m.

A woman inside the SUV that was struck was transported to a local hospital.

As the two men were waiting in police vehicles, they spoke briefly to Eyewitness News.

"I don't believe it was stolen," one suspect said. "I had the keys. Would you consider that stealing? It's not mine, but I had the keys. So that means I had the owner's consent right?"

When asked if he actually did have the owner's consent, he replied: "I don't know. You could ask him."

When the other suspect was asked why they didn't pull over, he replied they were "just being stupid."
