Vans US Open of Surfing sees stronger security measures in Huntington Beach

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- Tens of thousands of spectators are expected in Huntington Beach over the weekend for the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing.

The world's largest surfing competition has been around for decades, but many said this year is one of the best years for spectators.

"There's parking available - readily available, which is nice. The crowds are well under control. We're not seeing the kind of problems in the streets that we normally see. So it's turned out to be a really good, smooth year," resident Joe Anello said.

The city and police department have done a lot of work to make the event safe and family friendly after riots in 2013 marred the competition and festival. More security has been added, and the city has limited sales of alcohol.

Bomb sniffing dogs mounted police and officers with long rifles were visible throughout the event as an extra precaution with what has been going on nationally.

"The events that have been going on throughout our nation with attacks on police officers and then the terrorist attacks throughout the country, we are having a more heightened sense of security," said Jennifer Marilatt with the city's police department.

The FBI, Anaheim and Huntington Beach police departments have placed security cameras in key areas and monitor them for any suspicious activity.

The increased security is a welcome sight for most people attending the event, and it's a reminder for many to stay vigilant of their surroundings.
