Ventura, West LA called to conserve water; plant temporarily closed

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- The temporary shutdown of a water plant is prompting a call for water conservation in west Los Angeles County and Ventura County.

The Jensen Water Plant in Granada Hills is closed to undergo drought-related upgrades. That means hundreds of thousands of residents will be relying on a limited water supply through the weekend.

The impacted communities include Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills and Westlake Village. In south Ventura County, impacted communities include Moorpark, Oxnard, Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks.

Residents and businesses are being asked to cut back on water usage, including no watering lawns, filling pools or taking long showers.

"Calleguas' deliveries are essentially approaching summer demand levels at this point, given the dry conditions we've had recently," said Eric Bergh with the Calleguas Water District. "Our concern is, going into this weekend, as we're going to see temperatures climbing back into the 80s potentially in Simi, Conejo, and higher areas, could start to meet system capacity."

The Jensen Water Plant will be back up and running by noon on Sunday.

The rest of California is currently under a water supply alert due to the drought.
