VIDEO: Man with schizophrenia shot, killed by Los Angeles County deputies

LAKEWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- Newly released cellphone footage taken by a Lakewood neighbor shows the day a 33-year-old man was shot and killed by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies.

John Barry's mother Susan said the family called authorities on July 6 for a medical evaluation after he was behaving strangely. John suffers from schizophrenia.

"We agonize because we try to understand and there's no possible way to understand what happened," Susan Barry said.

Sheriff's deputies say when they first arrived, Barry tried to ram their vehicle. Attorneys for the Barry family say the 33-year-old's car had no front-end damage.

"He was unarmed. Didn't do anything wrong. Hadn't violated any laws. Wasn't a danger to anybody," attorney Steve Carlson said.

Deputies say they used pepper spray and a Taser to subdue Barry and only reached for their firearms when Barry began to reverse. The sheriff's department says one of their deputies was crushed between Barry's vehicle and an adjacent sheriff's vehicle. The deputy was taken to a hospital with lacerations to both legs and bruising to his left arm, officials said.

The Barry family says that did not happen and are suing the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, hoping their case will change policy and require more training.

"I just wish they had better training. He didn't hurt anybody. He didn't do anything that day," sister Melissa Barry said amid tears.
